Today, the 5th of May, was World Hand Hygiene Day!
Trust me guys, it was much more exciting than it sounds….
As a student dietitian currently completing a clinical placement in a hospital, my day was filled with fun games to create awareness of hand hygiene within the hospital and competitions to see which ward of the hospital was the most hygienic!
Did you know that there are just under 60 million healthcare workers worldwide. That means there are over 100 million hands that treat and touch patients on a daily basis. (1)
For health professionals it is essential that we perform the 5 moments of hand hygiene…

For the general public who visit hospitals to see loved ones, hand hygiene is just as important!
What can you do?
Washing your hands or using an alcohol-based hand rub before entering the hospital and the person’s bedroom you’re visiting can help to ensure you do not spread germs or put the person you are visiting at risk of catching any germs.
It also might be a good idea to wash your hands or use an alcohol-based hand rub after leaving the person’s room to make sure that you do not catch any germs yourself!
If you are a healthcare worker and you did something fun to raise awareness about hand hygiene around your workplace today I would love to hear about it!
Now that we’ve got the important stuff out of the way… check out this yummy vegetarian pizza I made the other night…
